SONY MDR-Z1R

Design & Construction

The Sony MDR-Z1R is the Sony's most expensive headphone in its 2016 lineup of High-Resolution Audio series. The headphone's headband is crafted with flexible and light beta titanium which has high elasticity and will return to its original shape even when bent. Genuine leather is also used to add sturdiness and comfort. The headphones has thick enfolding sheepskin cushions which is meant for providing a comfortable experience and perfect fit. The headband is very light and will not cause discomfort to those who wear spectacles. The headphones also resist fingerprints smudges very well.

Sound Quality

The huge 70mm High-Resolution headphone drivers (Aluminium-coated LCP edge diaphragm with Magnesium dome) certainly live up to its name. They produce a super clear sound signature to provide for a very immersive experience. This makes the headphones great for all genres of music ranging from soothing jazz to bass-heavy EDM tracks. Highs and mids come off as balanced and bass is slightly boosted which gives off a nice thump in your ear. A special acoustic filter also help control the air resistance and eliminates any reverberations produced by driver movement, so only clean and crisp frequencies get through. If you have the money, I recommend you to get one for immersive home listening.

Connectivity & Portability

The headphone operates via a 4.4Φ balanced cable connection for the purest output. A hard storage case is also included to protect the headphone from drops and scratches.

The Sony MDR-Z1R is a ideal audiophile reference headphone housing thick ear cushions, 70mm balanced drivers and inter-changable cables. It is highly recommended for home listening. More colours should be made available to fit users of different gender and personalities. Overall, it is a perfect reference headphone that has practically no flaws to be nitpicky about.
