Design & Construction

This is the Razer Ring Light, the first streaming light made by Razer for streamers. But in a saturated market of cheap ring lights, how does Razer stand out from its competitors? Unlike its competition, Razer went with a simple and straightforward approach when it comes to the execution of how it works. The Ring Light features a super lightweight and compact build that allows you to pack and go, enabling for streaming everywhere. To set-up, there is an aluminium tripod included in the package for you to mount the ring light on. When it's not extended, the tripod is 40cm and the maximum height is 135cm, making it capable of being placed on the floor for making TikTok videos. The tripod allow for articulation in the direction of the light source to be tilted towards the front or the back and the ability to add a phone holder or a ball head to hold a camera. I would, however, advised against putting a full mirrorless camera or DSLR alternative set-up on there as the tripod is really too lightweight to hold the weight of it and would topple over if you are not careful. Overall, the build of the tripod feels cheap and the ring light doesn't seem like it is able to survive a fall without cracking.

Lighting Performance & Quality

Moving on to lighting performance, the Ring Light features a 12-inch circular ring that outputs 500 lumens with its 192 LEDs. There is a remote control on the wire that connects to the light. On the remote, you will see the (From Bottom-to-Top), the power button, the brightness switches as well as the colour range switches that cycle from 3000K (Warm White), 4500K (Balanced White) to 6500K (Cool White). Overall, the colour rendering index is rated to be around 80% accurate and the brightness can be adjusted from 10% to 100% using the switches on the remote. The set-up process is seamless and would work well across the platform. There is however, no smart home option to link your Ring Light to your preferred smart home app of Apple Homekit, Google Home or Amazon Alexa for voice control and no Bluetooth or app support.

Connectivity & Portability

In terms of connectivity, the Razer Ring Light only works with the on-board remote which can be a double-edged sword depending on your use case. On one hand, you can easily bring it around and use it on the go without messing with the need for an app or the use of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections. On the other, there is a missed opportunity to have the set-up process to be ready to stream with just a touch of a button like the Elgato ecosystem. Personally, I prefer the straightforward and app-free experience especially if you don't want to be tied to one ecosystem or have everything controlled with your phone. The ring light gets its power via a USB-A port allowing you to plug it into a power bank or your laptop to power it up.
