Design & Construction

Master & Dynamic is back again with its updated MW07 series,. In this review, we will be looking at the MW07 Plus. But how do they fare against their competitors and is it worth the upgrade? Let's dive straight into it. Starting off with the design of the earbuds, the MW07 Plus earbuds are still constructed with a similar handcraft premium acetate material that is simply beautiful and iconic in their own way. Their design varies from product to product so each set does stand out from the rest. In the box, you will find various sizes of ear tips and ear wings to ensure a tight seal and secure fit. All controls for music playback and calls are controlled via the physical buttons on the top of each earbud. On the left earbud, you will find the volume buttons, while on the right, you will find the single multi-function button. Single press to play/pause, double press to skip forward, triple press to skip backwards and press and hold to activate smartphone assistant. It takes about 1.5 hours to charge both the case with the earbuds. Notably, the earbuds are IPX5 splash-resistant. The earbuds also do a great job at resisting fingerprints smudges. Moving on to the case, it is made of stainless steel and rounded to fit right into my palm of my hands. There are three LED indicators at the front of the case. The middle LED is for the charge of the case itself while the left and right LED is for the respective earbud. All LED indicators show green for a full charge, yellow for medium charge and red for a low charge. A USB Type-C port can be found on the rear of the case. The hinges holding the cover and body of the case is strong and is likely to survive a couple of accidental drops. The earbuds do magnetically click into place when they are docked into the case. However, the case is rather scratch-prone. When put into bags and store around other items they do suffer from damages that will eventually ruin the pristine look of the reflective case itself. The case is also a fingerprint magnet. On the bright side, Master & Dynamic provides a soft magnetic pouch to store the case in but it really isn't very smart have so many layers of protection for aesthetics solely.

Sound Quality

Master & Dynamic managed to fit a large 10mm beryllium speaker driver right into the MW07. They produce a very bright sound signature. Based on user experience, the noise isolation is great, I could not hear much of my surroundings even when I had no music on and when I am using it at a low volume level. High are crisp but mids are shallow and tuned backwards, hence the bass bleeds into the mid-range and drowns out details. The soundstage was okay with some left and right channels being heard clearly. The MW07 Plus in their stock sound signature is for genres of music ranging from soothing jazz to pop tracks, while EDM and Hip-hop track do suffer from bloated bass. Call quality was decent, the caller managed to hear me clearly on the other end.

Connectivity & Portability

The earbuds support AptX codec together with Bluetooth 5.0. However, there is no app support to tune your sound settings to your liking Features like smart pause which allows the user to stop music from playing when one earbud is removed from either ear are not found on the MW07 Plus either. There is no ambient sound hear-through to allows for listening to both environmental noise and music for safety. The earbuds automatically power on/off when docked or taken out from the case. The battery life peaks at 10 hours per use and 3 additional charges from the case; a total of 40 hours. This is definitely a huge jump from the previous generation MW07. The package also comes with a USB Type-C to USB Type-C cable for charging and a USB-A to USB Type-C adaptor. If you are planning to watch videos or movies with these, I am glad to report that they do not suffer from any latency.

The Bottom Line

With premium design and material usage, the Master & Dynamic MW07 Plus is special and unique in the saturated market of decently-designed true wireless in-ear headphones. Its rather high price tag isn't worth it for its sub-par sound and lack of noise-cancelling or app support to begin with. The MW07 Plus also comes in many different shades to fit users of different genders and personalities. More colours may be released in the future as well.

WE RATE IT!

7.5/10
