Design & Construction

Staying true to its name, the Beats Pill+ is shaped exactly like a pill. Taking its design cue from the Beats Pill 2.0, when you pick it up for the first time, it definitely feel like a durable yet portable speaker. However it is also not splash and dust resistant. The top is where all the controls are. You will find (From Right-Left); the power button, the multi-function button (Beats logo) and the Vol -, Vol + buttons. In front, there is a stereo active 2-way crossover system which houses dual tweeters and woofers. Aluminium and silcone wraps around the speaker. around the speaker. The Beats multi-function button act as controls to play, pause, skip forward or skip backwards. At the back, USB-Out port, 3.5mm aux port and a lightning port.

Sound Quality

As I said before, never judge a speaker by its size. It's true here once again, the sound reproduction of Pill+ is great. The volume is loud and surely fills regular-sized room with no issues. The bass response is as surprising too, it hits deep and much more than most competitors of its size. Highs sound bright but are not too sharp to listen to. Mids have clarity and details like instruments do stand out. Users can also double up with another Pill+ for stereo sound. However, do also note that it does not have a wide soundstage but that is typical of portable Bluetooth speakers. The speaker doesn't offers 360° sound unfortunately. There is a mic in-built for users to take calls as well. From my experience, my voice comes off clear and the mics did not pick up much surrounding noise, the caller could hear me clearly on the other end.

Connectivity & Portability

Even though no NFC is offered, Bluetooth pairing is quick and simple. An aux port allows users to use the speaker with non-Bluettoth devices. Its battery life peaks at a high of 12 hours and there is a LED gauge to indicate the battery life. It is also worth noting that the speaker charges up in 3 hours via the supplied lightning cable. The package also includes a 12.5W power adapter and a soft carrying pouch for keeping the speaker free from scratches. Using the Beats Pill+ App available for Apple and Android users, it allows users to rename their speaker, add another Pill+ for stereo sound and DJ to control music played from 2 sources. Simple and straightforward to use.

The Bottom Line

The Beats Pill+ is definitely an iconic-looking portable speaker but at a price. With a loud and bright sound signature, the drivers do a great job at handling all genres of music I threw at it. A pair will offer even louder stereo sound. Besides, having a range of colours allows users to express themselves.
